Tuesday 6th January

Story starter

As the winter sun bathed the tranquil pond, a small and timid duckling named Percy stood on the bank and watched his feathered friends splashing and frolicking. Unlike his fellow ducklings, Percy despised the sensation of water on his delicate webbed feet and refused to let a single droplet touch them. Instead, he sported a pair of yellow wellies, an unusual choice for a water-loving species, but one that kept his precious feet dry. Despite having developed a reputation as the duckling who refused to take a dip, an undeniable curiosity stirred within Percy's heart. With a deep breath and a determined quack, he decided it was high time he overcame his fear and explored the unknown world beyond the shore...

LC: To be able to convert between metres and kilometres.

The sun beat down on the tennis court as Mia bounced the ball carefully on the ground. Her hands felt sweaty, and her heart thudded loudly in her chest. She took a deep breath and glanced at the scoreboard: match point. The crowd had gone quiet, as if everyone was holding their breath with her.

Mia tossed the ball into the air and swung her racket with all her strength. The ball skimmed the net and landed just inside the white line. For a split second, there was silence. Then the umpire called, “Game, set, match!” Mia dropped her racket and smiled as cheers exploded around her.

R - What was the weather like on the tennis court?

I - Why do you think the crowd went quiet before Mia served?

C - Why do you think the author uses the phrase “her heart thudded loudly” instead of saying “she was nervous”?

-ant, -ance, -ancy rule

These endings are often used when the base word is a verb ending in -ate.

  • -ant → used for a person or thing

  • -ance / -ancy → used for a noun (an idea or state)

Examples:

  • observe → observant → observance

  • hesitate → hesitant → hesitancy

  • tolerate → tolerant → tolerance

🔹 Tip: If the verb ends in -ate, it often uses -ant / -ance / -ancy.

-ent, -ence, -ency rule

These endings are also used to change verbs into nouns or adjectives, but they do not usually come from -ate verbs.

  • -ent → adjective (describes)

  • -ence / -ency → noun (idea or state)

Examples:

  • confide → confident → confidence

  • depend → dependent → dependency

  • exist → existent → existence

Helpful memory trick (Year 6!)

“ATE → ANT”
If the verb ends in -ate, it probably takes -ant / -ance / -ancy.

Important note

Not all words follow the rule, so some need to be learned:

  • assistant / assistance

  • obedient / obedience
