The classroom fell quiet as Mr. Hughes opened the door. In stepped a boy none of us had seen before. He was tall for our age, with a mop of dark curls that looked like they had never met a hairbrush. His school jumper was too big, the sleeves nearly covering his hands, and his shoes were speckled with dried mud.
He didn’t look at anyone at first—just stared down at the floor, clutching his backpack strap so tightly his knuckles turned white. Mr. Hughes smiled and said, “Everyone, this is Leo. He’s just moved here from Manchester.”
Leo gave a small nod but still didn’t speak. When he finally glanced up, I noticed his eyes were the colour of storm clouds—grey and restless, like he was thinking about somewhere far away. I wondered what kind of place he had come from, and why he looked like he’d rather be anywhere else but here.
-
R - Where has Leo moved from?
-
I - How do you think Leo feels when he enters the classroom? Use evidence from the text to support your answer.
- C - How does the writer build a sense of mystery around Leo’s character?

Comprehension - The Poppies by the Gate
Every year in November, the people of Brambleton gather by the old iron gates of the village memorial. The names of forty-seven local soldiers are carved into the stone there, their letters faded but never forgotten.
Ella held her red paper poppy tightly in her mittened hand as the church bells began to ring. She stood beside her grandad, who was wearing his medals pinned neatly to his coat. “They belonged to your great-grandad,” he whispered. “He fought in the war when he was just a little older than you are now.”
As the vicar began to speak, Ella looked around. Even the smallest children were quiet. The air felt heavy, as though the whole village was holding its breath. A single bugler played The Last Post, and the sound floated over the fields where poppies would bloom again in summer.
After two minutes of silence, Grandad placed a wreath of bright red flowers by the gate. “We remember them,” he said softly. Ella nodded, finally understanding why people wore poppies each year — not because of war, but because of peace, and because some things must never be forgotten.
