LC: To multiply pairs of proper fractions

Over 400 years ago, in 1605, a man named Guy Fawkes was part of a secret group that planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London. The group was angry because they wanted a Catholic king, and they hoped to kill King James I and his government by using barrels of gunpowder hidden under the building.

However, the plan failed. Late one night, guards searched the cellars and discovered Guy Fawkes guarding the barrels. He was arrested and taken to the Tower of London, where he told the authorities about the plot. The other conspirators were also captured.

Every year on November 5th, people across Britain remember the Gunpowder Plot. Bonfires are lit, fireworks fill the sky, and sometimes an effigy, or “Guy,” is burned on the fire. The celebration reminds everyone to be thankful that the king was saved and the plot was stopped in time.

Local images around Burnley of the industrial cotton mills, that inspired the artist L.S. Lowry's art work.

L. S. Lowry -

Early life

Lowry was born on 1 November 1887 at 8 Barrett Street, Stretford, which was then in Lancashire.

After leaving school, Lowry began a career working for the Pall Mall Company, later collecting rents, he would spend some time in his lunch hour at Buile Hill Park and in the evenings took private art lessons in antique and freehand drawing.

Have a look at the Lowry pictures below. Think about how he has used composition, scale and proportion in his paintings of the industrial north of England. Also, have a look at the colours and detail in his work - what does this tell us about life at this time?

What did you notice?

In his landscapes, Lowry used perspective to ensure that his paintings looked in proportion. What does this mean?

Let's look more into perspective and how to achieve this in our artwork.

We call this one point perspective. It just uses one point known as a vanishing point (the point in the distance at where everything vanishes because it's too far away for us to see it).

Have another look at the Lowry picture below called 'The Fever Van'. Can you work out where the vanishing point would be?

Bearing this in mind, Lowry's art could also be rather naive (unsophisticated) too. Have a look at the steps that the boy is standing on - they are simple and almost look slightly out of proportion.

Lowry's characters are also naive too! Let's take a closer look.
