Lila pushed through the thick green leaves, her heart pounding with excitement and a little nervousness. The rainforest was alive with sounds—the chirping of colorful birds, the rustle of monkeys swinging through the branches, and the distant roar of a waterfall. Shafts of sunlight filtered through the tall trees, casting dancing shadows on the forest floor, where bright flowers peeked through the undergrowth.

As she stepped carefully over twisted roots and soft moss, Lila spotted a flash of brilliant blue—a rare poison dart frog resting on a leaf. She held her breath, afraid to scare it away. Suddenly, a sudden crack echoed nearby, and Lila froze. The rainforest was beautiful, but she remembered her guide’s warning: it was full of surprises. She had to stay alert.

R - What did Lila step over as she walked?

I - Why does Lila hold her breath when she sees the poison dart frog?

C - Why do you think the author described the shadows as “dancing”?

Tundra Biome

What is a Tundra Biome?

The tundra biome is one of the coldest and harshest environments on Earth. It is a large, treeless area where the ground stays frozen for most of the year. This frozen ground is called permafrost. Because of the freezing temperatures, only a few hardy plants and animals can survive in the tundra.

Where Are Tundras Found?

Tundras are mostly found near the North Pole, in places like Alaska, Canada, Russia, and Greenland. There is also a type of tundra found on high mountains all over the world, called alpine tundra.

Climate of the Tundra

The tundra has very cold temperatures, especially in winter, when it can drop to –30°C or even lower. In summer, it gets a little warmer, but the season is very short—only about two months. Even during summer, the ground may stay frozen just below the surface.

The tundra also receives very little rainfall—less than most deserts! But because the ground is frozen, water doesn’t soak in, so the surface can become soggy with melted snow.

Plants in the Tundra

Only a few plants can grow in the tundra. These include mosses, lichens, grasses, and small shrubs. Trees cannot grow here because the soil is too frozen and shallow. Plants in the tundra are low to the ground and grow close together to stay warm and protect themselves from strong winds.

Animals in the Tundra

Even though it’s a tough place to live, some animals have adapted to survive in the tundra. These include the arctic fox, caribou (reindeer), snowy owl, polar bear, and lemmings. Many tundra animals have thick fur or fat to keep warm. Some animals change the colour of their fur to white in winter to blend in with the snow.

Why Is the Tundra Important?

The tundra helps to control the Earth’s climate by storing carbon in its frozen soil. If the permafrost melts due to global warming, it could release gases that make climate change worse. That’s why it’s important to protect the tundra and keep it cold.
