The ship creaked as the waves rocked it gently from side to side. Sam leaned over the rail, staring at the endless stretch of water. Somewhere out there was the island marked with a red X on the old map he had discovered in the attic. The thought made his stomach twist with both excitement and fear. What if the treasure was real? And what if he wasn’t the only one searching for it?

RIC Questions:

  • Retrieve: Where did Sam find the old map?

  • Interpret: How does Sam feel about the journey ahead? Give two feelings.

  • Choice: Why do you think the writer uses the phrase “endless stretch of water”?

The Midnight Spell

Elena had always believed that magic belonged only in books. That changed on the night she discovered the silver key. She found it buried beneath the roots of an ancient oak, glinting faintly in the moonlight. When she picked it up, the air around her seemed to shimmer, as though the stars themselves were holding their breath.

She slipped the key into her pocket, but it grew warmer and warmer until she could no longer ignore it. To her astonishment, it pulled her hand towards a hidden wooden door in the side of the oak tree. With trembling fingers, Elena turned the key. The door creaked open, revealing a staircase that spiralled down into glowing darkness.

As she stepped inside, she heard whispers—soft voices calling her name. The scent of wild herbs filled the air, and tiny sparks floated like fireflies. Elena’s heart raced. Was this the beginning of an adventure, or had she stumbled into a danger she could not yet imagine?

The Magic Hat

One windy morning, Ella found a shiny, purple hat in her garden. She put it on her head and—whoosh!—sparkling stars floated all around her.

Ella waved her hand, and suddenly, a bunch of flowers popped up in the grass. She laughed and tried again. This time, a little white rabbit hopped out of the hat!

But when Ella sneezed—Achoo!—the hat tumbled off her head. The magic stopped. The rabbit wriggled its nose, and the flowers slowly faded away.

Ella picked up the hat carefully. “I think I’ll keep you safe,” she whispered, smiling.
