Jamie crept down the hallway, careful not to step on the squeaky floorboard outside Grandad’s study. The house was silent, except for the steady tick... tick... tick of the grandfather clock.

He paused in front of the old wooden door. A dusty sign hung from the handle: "Do Not Enter."

Jamie’s heart thudded. He had seen Grandad disappear through this door late at night, carrying strange glowing objects.

Today, the door was unlocked.

Slowly, Jamie reached for the handle and turned it.

LC: To monitor understanding while reading and use strategies to repair meaning when comprehension breaks down.

What is "Monitoring and Repairing"?

Sometimes when we read, we get stuck or confused. Good readers notice when that happens and do something to fix it. This is called monitoring and repairing.

Strategies to Repair Understanding:

  • Re-read the sentence or paragraph
  • Read ahead to see if it gets clearer
  • Ask yourself: Does this make sense?
  • Check the meaning of tricky words
  • Think about what’s happened so far

Read the text below:

The room shimmered as if it were made of starlight. Shelves spun slowly in the air, covered in objects that whispered secrets. Daniel stepped carefully forward, unsure if the floor beneath him was even solid.

“What is this place?” he asked, his voice shaking.

Mr Silver smiled. “This is just one of the many wonders you’ll grow used to, if you stay.”

Daniel wasn’t sure whether to feel excited or terrified.
