Lena crept through the narrow alleyway, the dim glow of the streetlamp barely lighting her path. Her footsteps were silent, muffled by the thick fog curling around her boots. Somewhere in the distance, a dog barked, sharp and sudden.

She paused beside a rusty gate and peered through. Beyond it, a small garden sat in silence, its flowers wilted, and the bench beneath the old oak tree stood empty.

She had been told not to come here after dark.

But tonight felt different. Something was calling her.

R - What kind of tree stood in the garden?

I - Why do you think Lena paused beside the gate?

C - Why does the author describe the fog as curling around her boots? What effect does this create?
