Lena pushed open the rusty gate. It creaked loudly, and she winced, hoping no one had heard. The garden beyond was overgrown—wild vines curled around broken statues, and weeds poked through the cracks in the stone path. But in the middle of the mess stood a single, bright red rose, glowing in the sunlight like a jewel.
She stepped forward slowly, heart pounding. This garden had been locked for as long as she could remember. Her grandmother used to tell stories about it—about a place full of magic and secrets.
Lena bent down to look at the rose. Just as she reached out to touch it, a soft whisper drifted through the air.
"Welcome back..."
R - What did Lena push open at the beginning of the extract?
I - How do you think Lena feels as she enters the garden? Give evidence from the text.
C - Why do you think the author described the rose as “glowing in the sunlight like a jewel”?

Book to Self
When I watched The Jungle Book trailer, I saw a boy in the jungle surrounded by animals, and it made me think of times when I’ve gone on nature walks or camping trips. I remember feeling small compared to the trees and hearing animals around me, just like the jungle in the trailer. The trailer made me feel curious and a little nervous, wondering what it would be like to live in the wild like Mowgli. It reminded me of how I sometimes imagine being part of an adventure in nature, far away from the home. The trailer makes me excited to read the story and think about how I would feel in Mowgli’s place.
Cubism
Cubism was a revolutionary new approach to representing reality invented in around 1907–08 by artists Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque.
