 Grammar Warm Up

LC: to use modal verbs to indicate degrees of possibility

LC: to identify the conventions of discussion

Read the discussion text about zoos.

What reasons are given for and against having zoos?

Talk to your partner.

Let's look at the structure (how it is built).

Draw arrows to find the words that match the description.

Now, look at the for/against topic you wrote about yesterday.

Using those ideas, write an introduction following the model:

- a clear title

- a general statement about the topic

- another second detail about the general topic

- a linking phrase to introduce the final point

- a rhetorical question that rephrases the title to end the paragraph

LC:  to test a design to assess if it is fit for purpose and to make necessary adaptations to improve

We are going to test our gliders to see if they will fly.

Step 1

Try and fly it.

Step 2

Look at the glider to see what could be improved. What adaptations could you make?

- does it need to be neater? Can you use scissors to trim the foam?

- how are you flying it? Are you managing to get the right thrust?

- is there enough lift? Should the nose be more aerodynamic?

Step 3

Try again to fly it. Have your adaptations worked?

Evaluation

As engineers, we have designed, cut, joined and tested our gliders. Now we must evaluate our work.

Evaluate - means to assess the value of something.

Talk to your partner:

- what went well?

- what would you differently next time?

- what have you learnt about design?

LC: To draw inferences from a text.

Lila had lived in the village all her life but had never noticed the small gate at the end of Willow Lane. One sunny afternoon, she opened it and stepped into a beautiful garden.

Flowers of every colour grew there, and old stone statues peeked from behind the hedges. A sparkling fountain bubbled in the sunlight.

On a bench, Lila found a small notebook. Inside were sketches of the garden and notes like: “Water the roses carefully,” “Plant more tulips here.”

Someone had been looking after this secret garden for years. Lila smiled and decided she would return soon to explore more.

R- What did she see in the garden?

I- Why do you think someone left notes in the notebook?

C- Would you want to return to the garden like Lila? Why or why not?

Main:

Activity: Write every phrase that tells us something about the traveller who arrives at the inn. Some may be literal and some may be inferred. You are hunting for clues that tell or hint at what the man is like.

Virtual News

LC: To explain and discuss their understanding of what they have read.

Tom loved looking at the stars. Every evening, he would take his telescope to the hill behind his house. One night, the sky was especially clear, and he could see hundreds of stars twinkling.

Suddenly, a bright streak of light shot across the sky. “A shooting star!” Tom whispered. He quickly made a wish.

As he watched, he noticed the constellations forming familiar shapes: a bear, a hunter, and even a dragon. Tom felt excited and small at the same time. The sky was so big, and he could see so much from his little hill.

Before heading home, Tom carefully packed up his telescope. He couldn’t wait for the next clear night to see more wonders above.

R- Where did Tom take his telescope?

I- Why do you think Tom felt “excited and small” at the same time?

C- Which word shows that Tom was careful with his telescope? Explain your choice.

Main:  We will read the text together.

The sword in the stone.

ACTIVITY:

1. What does the word 'prosperous' mean? Use a dictionary.

2. According to the first paragraph of the story, why was King Uther unhappy?

3. What did Merlin ask for in return for helping King Uther?

4. What was the kingdom like while King Uther was king? How did it change when he died?

5. Read the paragraph starting 'King Uther was so distraught'. Find and copy a phrase from this paragraph that suggests it would be difficult to remove the stone from the sword.
