Grammar Warm Up
LC: to identify function of apostrophes for contractions and belonging
Read these sentences
My dad's car is red.
The dog's bowl is empty.
Ahmet's bag was red.
Mrs Khan's hair was bouncy.
1.Circle the apostrophe
2. What job is the apostrophe doing in each sentence? Why is it there?
a) to look pretty?
b) to show that the something belongs to someone?
c) to show a letter is missing?

LC: to summarise the main ideas drawn from more than one paragraph, identifying key details that support the main ideas

We are going to 'chunk' the plot so far into 4 sections so we can retell the story so far from Ahmet's first person perspective.
1. chapters 1 and 2
2. chapters 3 and 4
3. chapters 6 and 7
4. chapters 9 and 10
If we are chunking the plot to retell from Ahmet's point of view, why do you think we are not including chapters 5 and 8?

Use the text to help you complete the first column only of the table.
Now let's make a toolkit for a first person narrative.

The Listeners Walter De LA Mare
‘Is there anybody there?’ said the Traveller,
Knocking on the moonlit door;
And his horse in the silence champed the grasses
Of the forest’s ferny floor:
And a bird flew up out of the turret,
Above the Traveller’s head:
And he smote upon the door again a second time;
‘Is there anybody there?’ he said.
But no one descended to the Traveller;
No head from the leaf-fringed sill
Leaned over and looked into his grey eyes,
Where he stood perplexed and still.
But only a host of phantom listeners
That dwelt in the lone house then
Stood listening in the quiet of the moonlight
To that voice from the world of men:
Stood thronging the faint moonbeams on the dark stair,
That goes down to the empty hall,
Hearkening in an air stirred and shaken
By the lonely Traveller’s call.
And he felt in his heart their strangeness,
Their stillness answering his cry,
While his horse moved, cropping the dark turf,
’Neath the starred and leafy sky;
For he suddenly smote on the door, even
Louder, and lifted his head:—
‘Tell them I came, and no one answered,
That I kept my word,’ he said.
Never the least stir made the listeners,
Though every word he spake
Fell echoing through the shadowiness of the still house
From the one man left awake:
Ay, they heard his foot upon the stirrup,
And the sound of iron on stone,
And how the silence surged softly backward,
When the plunging hoofs were gone.
The poem was written over one hundred years ago.
Activity 1
Write down two reasons you can tell it was written and set a long time ago.
Activity 2
Why do you think the Traveller went to the house?
Activity 3
The poet does not tell the reader what the ‘listeners’ are, but he encourages us to use our imagination.
Who or what do you think the listeners are?
