Medusa, who was as ugly as a gargoyle, was a hideous creature. With claw-like hands and tusks for teeth, the monster was the most fearsome in the land. Instead of hair, Medusa had live, venomous snakes that hissed constantly like a tap that had been left on. Her skin had a loathsome, greenish tinge and she had the devil’s eyes. She was the loneliest and most miserable creature for anyone who made eye contact with her would instantly be turned to stone.

Knowing that he was facing an impossible mission, Perseus, who normally feared nothing, went to the Temple of Athena to pray for help. The gods heard his prayers and granted him some gifts. These were a razor-sharp sword, a brightly-polished shield and sack for the monster’s head. Perseus – who was now feeling more confident about his quest - set off.

R - What did Medusa have instead of hair?

I - How did Perseus feel before he went to the Temple? Find evidence in the text.

C - Find a complex sentence with a relative clause.

LC: Infer characters’ feelings from their actions and justify with evidence from the text.

An inference is an idea or conclusion that we reach from evidence and reasoning.

Inferring is making an educated guess, a choice, a decision.

We use clues and our background knowledge to make sense of something when we are not explicitly given the information.

Today we are going to justify our inferences with evidence from the text. Justifying is giving our reasons for making the inferences.

I think the boy is tired because it states he was yawning.

Let's read the first three lines of the text below (All Change) and make inferences together.

All Change

Activity

Read the rest of the text and make inferences.

I think Abby felt... because in the text it says...

I think Freddie is... because in the text it says...

I think Freddie feels... because in the text it says...

I think Abby is going to... because in the text it says...

After a long and difficult journey, Perseus eventually arrived at Medusa’s gloomy, death-filled lair. Courageously, he tiptoed up to the entrance and stopped, peering and listening. A wave of terror washed over him. All around him were stone statues of others who had tried and failed to defeat the hideous gorgon. How could he defeat a creature that he could not directly look at? Then an idea came to him! He remembered the gifts from the gods. While using his shield to look at the reflection of Medusa, he swung his sword and, with one clean sweep, cut off her head!

Positioning the head in his sack, Perseus headed to confront the evil king. On his return, a bewildered Polydectus demanded, “Show me the head!” Perseus carefully opened the sack and Polydectus gazed deeply into the Gorgon’s eyes. In an instant, he was turned to stone. Perseus had succeeded in his mission so he and his mother were now safe.

R - What did Perseus remember from the gods?

I - Summarise both paragraphs.

C - The author has used some effective verbs. Can you find them?

What is inference?

Does the text always tell us how someone if feeling?

How do we know how a character is feeling?

When reading, we need to interpret the clues in the text - NOT just think about how we would feel in that situation.

Opposite, at the bus stop, everyone was there. All the usual crowd messing about.  Abby saw Becky, her best friend, laughing and joking with Cloe.

How is Abby feeling?

What is the evidence?

Tom's thoughts:

Tom assumes Abby would be jealous because that's how he felt when his best friend was laughing and joking with someone else.

Alya's thoughts:

Alya assumed Abby would be happy because her friends are having a good time together.

BUT the whole text gives us a clue about how Abby is feeling:

Opposite, at the bus stop, everyone was there. All the usual crowd messing about.  Abby felt a sharp pang as she saw Becky, her best friend, laughing and joking with Cloe.

The evidence 'felt a sharp pang' tells us that she has a negative feeling. It might be jealousy, it might be sadness.

Activity 1

Feeling Charades

You will choose a feeling below and act it out without saying the word.

The class will then guess which emotion you have chosen, but must explain the reasoning. For example, “I think she’s nervous because she’s fidgeting and looking at the floor”.

Activity 2

In small groups, you will be given a scenario card.

You will create a short, silent scene (no words allowed, only gestures, facial expressions, and movement).

Groups will perform to the rest of the class and we will try to infer what is happening and how characters are feeling.

What might have happened?

How does each character feel?

What clues gave it away?
