LC: To be able to explain the reasons why the Anglo-Saxons came to Britain.

Why did the Anglo-Saxons come to Britain?

To fight

The Anglo-Saxons arrived firstly as warriors employed by the Roman army and then, two generations later, as settlers, to farm the land.

To farm

Many Anglo-Saxons came peacefully, to find land to farm. Their homelands in Scandinavia often flooded so it was tough to grow enough food back there.

To make new homes

Whole families set sail across the sea in small boats to live in Britain. They brought tools, weapons and farm animals with them and built new villages.

They were invited

With Picts and Scots attacking from the north, the Britons invited some Anglo-Saxons to help defend them. But they didn’t leave! They took over.

Discuss which you think is the most important reason why Saxons came to Britain and never left.

In your books order the reasons why Saxons wanted to come to Britain.

1.

2.

3.

4.

Now explain why you have placed reason number 1 first.

LC: To identify areas for research.

Purpose and Audience:

Ribchester Museum (visit the website -  https://ribchestermuseum.org/ ) have asked our school to produce leaflets for other children to tell them all about Ancient Roman life. They have heard that our Year 4 classes have been learning all about this, so thought that we would be the best people to ask.

What would you like to include about Roman life in your leaflet?

Task 2: we are now going to use our planning skeleton to research one section using some of the links below.

As we are watching the clip, I will model how to make notes.

Click on the links below where you can find out more and take notes for your report.

LC: To explain the significance of Sawm and the Night of Power

1. What is Sawm?

Sawm means fasting.
It is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, which are the most important duties for Muslims.

What Muslims do during Sawm (Ramadan):

  • Fast from sunrise to sunset

  • Do not eat or drink during daylight

  • Spend more time praying and reading the Qur’an

  • Try to be kind, patient, and helpful

  • Think about people who have less

Why Sawm is important:

  • Helps Muslims feel closer to Allah

  • Teaches self-control

  • Helps them appreciate their blessings

  • Encourages charity and helping others

  • Strengthens the community because everyone fasts together

2. What is the Night of Power?

The Night of Power (also called Laylat al-Qadr) is one of the holiest nights in Islam.

What Muslims believe happened:

  • It is the night when the first verses of the Qur’an were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

  • It is believed to fall within the last 10 nights of Ramadan.

Why the Night of Power is important:

  • Muslims believe prayers on this night are worth more than prayers made at any other time.

  • It is seen as a time when Allah’s blessings and mercy are greatest.

  • It is a chance to ask for forgiveness and make good choices for the future.

  • Many Muslims stay awake all night praying and reading the Qur’an.

3. Putting it Together

Significance of Sawm + Night of Power

  • Sawm prepares Muslims spiritually—through fasting and reflection.

  • The Night of Power is the holiest moment of Ramadan when Muslims seek closeness to Allah.

  • Both help Muslims grow in faith, self-discipline, and gratitude.

Questions: Answer in full sentences.

  • Why is fasting during Sawm more than just not eating?

  • How does Sawm help Muslims understand the needs of others?

  • Why is the Night of Power considered more important than any other night?

  • How do Sawm and the Night of Power connect to each other?
