LC: To understand the idea of commitment in the Muslim faith.

What does the word, commitment mean?

Commitment means sticking to something and staying dedicated, even when it is not easy.

It involves:

  • Not giving up

  • Making time and effort

  • Doing what you believe is important

Simple examples of commitment:

  • Practising a sport regularly to improve

  • Helping your family every day

  • Following rules or routines even when you don’t feel like it

In a religious context:

Commitment means living by your beliefs, not just talking about them. It is shown through actions, choices, and routines.

For example, in faith:

  • Praying regularly

  • Helping others

  • Following religious teachings

Now, in groups, discuss the following 4 questions. Each person needs to gave a chance to share.

Be ready to share with the class.

People who belong to a religious faith show their commitment to it.

How do Muslims show their commitment?   What do we already know?

Click the image to find out about the 5 Pillars of Islam.

In the Muslim faith, commitment means showing dedication to Allah (God) every day through beliefs, actions, and choices. Muslims show this commitment by following the Five Pillars of Islam, which are the five most important duties in Islam.

Commitment in Islam: The Five Pillars

1. Shahadah – Declaration of Faith

“There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”

  • This is the first and most important pillar

  • By saying and believing this, Muslims commit to:

    • Worshipping only Allah

    • Following the teachings of Prophet Muhammad

  • It guides how Muslims explain the world and live their lives

Shows commitment through belief and loyalty to God

2. Salah – Prayer

  • Muslims pray five times a day

  • Prayers happen at set times (morning, midday, afternoon, evening, night)

  • Prayer helps Muslims:

    • Remember Allah

    • Say thank you

    • Ask for guidance

Shows commitment by giving time every day to worship, even when busy

3. Zakah – Giving to Charity

  • Muslims give a small part of their money to help the poor

  • This helps:

    • Reduce inequality

    • Care for others

    • Build a fair community

Shows commitment by putting faith into action and helping others

4. Sawm – Fasting during Ramadan

  • During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset

  • They do not eat or drink during daylight hours

  • Fasting helps Muslims:

    • Learn self-control

    • Feel empathy for the poor

    • Focus on prayer and kindness

Shows commitment through self-discipline and patience

5. Hajj – Pilgrimage to Makkah

  • Muslims try to visit Makkah once in their lifetime (if they are able)

  • Millions of Muslims gather together to worship Allah

Shows commitment by making a spiritual journey and joining the worldwide Muslim community

Summary

The Five Pillars of Islam show commitment because they guide:

  • What Muslims believe

  • How Muslims worship

  • How Muslims treat others

  • How Muslims live every day

Together, they help Muslims live a life that is faithful, disciplined, and caring

In your books, complete the 5 Pillars picture with the correct words and underneath write what each of the pillars means.  Include why these are important for Muslims.
