Identify main ideas drawn from more than one paragraph and summarise these.

A summary is a brief recollection or account of the main points in a text. It is short and to the point and leaves out the additional details.

Here is a summary of the first chapter of our Ryumaysa story:

Samar took food from the witch's garden to feed his wife. When Naina had her baby, the witch came to their house and took her as payment for Samar's theft.

Now let's have a go at these:

My turn

Read the text below. Summarise what has happened in as few words as possible

The New Puppy

Ahmad slowly moved towards the basket as his heart pounded in his chest. Today was the day they were bringing her home. Pulling her nose out of her soft paws and looking up, the golden puppy with soft fur yawned and blinked up at him. “Is it really OK to take her with us today?” asked Ahmad hopefully. Mum and Dad joined hands and smiled at each other. Turning to Ahmad, Mum nodded and responded gently, “Yes. She is all ours."

Your turn

1. Read the story below. Summarise in as few words as possible what has happened so far.

An Alien Adventure

Taylor followed her new alien friend out of the cosy spaceship and realised they were not on planet Earth. They must have travelled millions of miles in a matter of minutes. All around her, there were strange, twisted trees with small, purple leaves. The grass was a peculiar hue of turquoise and the water in the nearby stream ran bright green and shone like emeralds. ‘Where are we?’ Taylor thought.

2. What are the main ideas in the text below. Can you summarise the text in three sentences?

Beginning Gymnastics

Dear Diary, Today, I started gymnastics lessons. It was very tiring but I enjoyed it thoroughly.

First, we had to follow the instructor and stretch our bodies in a variety of ways.

Next, we had to create certain formations while jumping on the trampoline. I am very good at performing the pike position.

Finally, we had to learn how to properly use all of the equipment. I think I am really going to enjoy being a gymnast.

1. Shared read this text with the teacher:

The dog ran away and didn’t look back. I could see my brown paper bag hanging out of the side of her mouth as she went. I can’t believe she took it. My lunch was in there, I have nothing to eat now. Worst of all, my bus ticket was in that bag too! How am I going to get home?

Which of these choices do you think is the best summary?

A friendly dog playing games in the park.

Someone had their lunch bag and bus ticket stolen by a cheeky, hungry dog.

A naughty dog stole things from strangers.

Someone lost their lunch and bus ticket.

2. Shared read this text with the teacher:

On Saturday afternoon I went to the beach with my family. We played beach cricket and swam in the ocean. My brother built a sandcastle and I collected some shells to decorate it. Mum bought us all an ice cream from the ice cream truck and then we went back home. It was a great day!

Which of these choices do you think is the best summary?

An ice cream truck came to the beach to sell ice creams to everyone.

A family played cricket, swam, built sandcastles, collected shells and ate ice cream.

A family spent a fun Saturday afternoon at the beach playing together and enjoying ice cream.

A family played cricket and built sandcastles at the beach.

LC: To use nouns for precision and noun phrases.

Poem:

Zabina the majestic owl.

Zabina the owl has big blue eyes to hunt for prey and fruits for Rumaysa,

Her talons are as sharp as knives to hunt and kill her prey,

Her feathers are ruby red and look like they are on fire,

Her beak is hooked like a hanger and it sits perfectly in the middle of her heart shaped face,

Her unique hooting lets Rumaysa know her dear friend has arrived.

Modelled write.

Using the poem we will be writing a paragraph. We will be using the prompts below.

Zabina turned/rotated/spun her head around – just the same as every day in Splinterfell…

She sighed as she looked on at Rumaysa in the tall tower. Zabina cared deeply for her friend and hoped someday soon she would be free and that she could find a way to help.

Zabina was a .. owl with … eyes that could see for … Feathers like… and talons which gripped… Her beak…

She could fly like… swooping and … Zabina protected Rumaysa fiercely and would do anything to keep her safe.

LC: Can we use geographical vocabulary to describe the water cycle?

In Year 3, you learned the life cycle of a flowering plant. What does the word 'cycle' tell you about the process?

Today, we are going to learn about a different cycle - the Water Cycle. We will be linking it to what we have learned in Science about changes of state as well as learning some new vocabulary to help us write our own explanation.

Did you know:

The Earth's surface is about 71% water.

The water cycle, which is how water moves around the Earth, began about 3.8 billion years ago.

The water you drink today is the same water the dinosaurs drank millions of years ago, as it is constantly recycled through the water cycle.

Listen to this song, then have a go at joining in a couple of times. Often, putting our learning to music can make it more memorable.

Now let's recap.

rivers and streams        precipitation            run-off

underground water       sea           wind         sun

evaporation           condensation

Stick the diagram under the date and learning challenge in your book, then write an explanation of the water cycle underneath.

What happens if we don’t exercise. It can lead to all kinds of health problems, either now or later on in life.

  3. Involvement in physical exercise helps us to think more clearly and encourages a healthy mind. Happiness and health are closely linked.

  4. Christians believe that God created human beings in body, mind and spirit. Psalm 139 celebrates this and the amazing job that God has done with us. A paraphrase of a verse from Psalm 139 says, ‘I praise you for the wonderful way you made me. Your ways are strange and wonderful – I know this with all my heart.’

Time for reflection

Let’s think about our bodies and how amazing we are! Let’s remind ourselves of our responsibility to keep ourselves healthy in every way we can so that we can enjoy life to the full.

Think about how we can use exercise to keep ourselves healthy and happy. Maybe we enjoy lots of sports, or maybe just one or two. Exercise can take many different forms. It doesn’t matter what we choose; it’s up to us to find something that we enjoy doing. Maybe we could do more walking, either to school or out with our families. Let’s think about how healthy, exercised bodies can also stimulate or help our minds so that we learn better, too.

Reflection:
Thank you for the way we are created.
Thank you for our amazing bodies.
Thank you that we all have so many gifts and abilities.
Help us to appreciate this and do all we can to keep ourselves healthy.
