LC: Do we know who the Romans were and how they built their Empire?

In our History lessons this half term, we are going to be learning about Ancient Rome, the spread of the Roman Empire, its invasion of Britain and the impact of this.

First of all, let's explore some of our new vocabulary - talk with your talk partner about the words in bold. Have you heard any of them before? Do you know what they mean?

Who were the Romans and how did they build their Empire?

The Romans were a group of people who were able to build a huge empire by invading and conquering other lands and peoples.

The Romans in time

Chronology is the study of time, looking at when events happened and in what order.

You have learned about lots of different times in history. We can put these in chronological order on a timeline.

Remember:

BC stands for Before Christ and refers to any date before the year Christians believe Jesus was born. The Romans who introduced this calendar had no symbol for zero and the year that Jesus was born was called Year 1. We usually use BC when we are saying the dates.

AD stands for Anno Domini and is a medieval Latin phrase that means, ‘In the year of our Lord’. AD is used for dates after the point Christians believe Jesus was born. We do not usually say AD when we say dates after 1000 AD.

Now let's find out about the beginning of Rome and the spread of the Empire.

 What have you learned?

Adventure

“I’d rather live one day as a tiger than a lifetime as a sheep.”

Discuss with your talk partner what does this mean to you.

How adventurous are you?
