The Young Writers Magazine has asked its readers to write a fantastic opening for a story, based on a picture. At Stoneyholme, we are always up for a challenge.

Today you are going to have the opportunity to write just for the joy of it! BUT you will need to remember to apply to your writing everything that you've learned.

What does a story opening need?

Choose from these pictures and off you go!

Bonfire Night is a special celebration in England on the 5th of November. On this night, people light big bonfires and watch colourful fireworks in the sky. Families and friends gather outside to keep warm by the fire and enjoy tasty treats like hot dogs, toffee apples, and marshmallows. The night remembers a man named Guy Fawkes, who tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament a long time ago. Now, people celebrate that the plan was stopped by having fun and watching the bright lights sparkle in the dark sky.

How?

  • collect and record data to explain what people, places and environments are like
  • stay safe

  • present your findings using maps, pictures, charts, diagrams and writing

Activity

This afternoon we are going to produce a 'zone of relevance' map. I have modelled one below, I am sure yours will be far more detailed! The centre of your map will be Stoneyholme Community Primary School, the community will be near by and Hameldon hill will be far away.

1. Start by sketching our school by using google maps to get the outline.

2. Using observational skills, sketch out the surrounding area. Remember to rotate your map as your draw. Your teacher will model this.

3. Sketch Hameldon hill, remember to sketch what you see not what you think a hill looks like!

If the weather is poor we can use this image to help!
