LC: Use active reading strategies to make inferences about a character
What can we infer about Jill from this short story?
Jill got down from the school bus. Upon opening the front door of the house, she noticed that all the lights were turned off. It seemed that nobody was home because everything was quiet inside the house. As Jill walked on tiptoes into the living room then to the dining room, her heart started to beat fast. She called out for her parents and grandparents, “Mum, Dad, Lola, Lolo, are any of you home?” Just as she was about to enter the kitchen, the light suddenly turned on. “Surprise!” her parents and grandparents shouted, while handing out a cake to her. She was startled, but she smiled immediately upon realising the surprise birthday greeting. She hugged and thanked each of them for the pleasant surprise.

What can we infer about Manny Berto from this short story?
Manny Berto has been working tirelessly as a taxi driver in Metro Manila for almost ten years. Throughout those years, he has never said no to driving a passenger to their destination. He sometimes feels tired with all the driving he does, but he knows that he is working hard for the future of his family. One day, he drove a tourist to a hotel from the airport. The tourist unknowingly paid him more than the amount indicated by the meter and immediately alighted the taxi before Manny Berto could tell him that he had overpaid. He stopped the engine of his taxi and ran after the tourist. “Sir, excuse me,” he said in between breaths. “You overpaid me for the fare, Sir. Here is the extra one hundred pesos.” The tourist smiled and thanked Manny Berto for his deed.
