LC: Consider why the Sikh values of equality and justice might be good values for people to live their lives by.
Equality and justice are about treating people fairly and selflessly.
Equality is when each person is seen as equal in the eyes of the law.
A government that protects human rights makes one set of laws for everyone, not different laws for different people.
In the past, the law has discriminated against some groups based on their race, religion, gender.
Social justice is when each person can exercise their rights within a society.
A government that promotes social justice ensures that everyone has physical security, education, healthcare, and employment.
Can you remember how Sikhs show the values of equality and justice?
Did we remember?
Both men and women are equal and treated equally, they both sit on the floor in the gurdwara and they both have to cover their hair when in the gurdwara.
The poor and the rich are treated the same and are given equal rights.
Sikhs show the quality of justice by participating in Sewa (a selfless act) by cooking the langar to feed everyone, cleaning shoes for worshipers and visitors in the Gurdwara, volunteering their time for charity work and ensuring everyone has equal rights.
What would life be like for everyone if all people practised equality and justice?
In 2015, leaders from all 193 countries of the United Nations made the most ambitious plan that has ever been agreed to combat inequalities and injustices in the world. These are called Global Goals.
If these were achieved, what would be different for these for these people?
