LC: Identify main ideas drawn from more than one paragraph and summarise these

Let's revise -  what is a paragraph?

Last time we learned how writers use paragraphs in stories.

Today we are going to learn how to identify and summarise the main ideas of a section of a story.

Can you remember what a summary is?

First, let's practise what we learned in our last lesson. We will identify the purpose of each paragraph.

Now let's learn how to summarise the main ideas in this section of the story.

LC: To be able to use point and evidence to support opinions.

Grammar: Imitate

Cautiously, Gromit tiptoed up the stairs.

Gratefully, Gromit took the box from Fluffles.

Quietly, the killer crept behind Baker Bob wielding a rolling pin.

Eagerly, Wallace introduced him self, "I'm Wallace."

We will be creating a story board using freeze

frames of the story so far with some of you taking on the role of the characters.

Gromit likes Miss Bake O’ Light;

Miss Bake O’ Light is going to marry Wallace;

Several bakers have moved house...

Teacher model: talk in role.

Gromit gets fed up:

What is Gromit thinking?

How is he feeling?

Why does he feel this way?

Can he share his feelings with Wallace? Why? Why not?

Your turn: Write in role of Fluffles for the story so far. Remember to write in first person using I, me and my.

How is Fluffles feeling?

Why does she feel this way?

What is Fluffles thinking?

Why is she thinking this?

LC- Locate countries of Europe and find their capital cities.

 Look at the following map. What can you remember about your learning in Geography in Years Two and Three?

Can you name the continents and oceans?

Do you know the name of any countries and where they are?

Today we are going to learn more about the  continent Europe.

Can you spot it on the map?

Do you know already know anything about Europe?

Europe is made up of many different countries. Use the map below and an atlas to identify them.

Did you notice that one of the countries on the first map was not on the second?

Some people do not think Russia is a European country, but part of it actually is.

 Russia, or the Russian Federation, is a country spanning Eastern Europe and North Asia. It is the largest country in the world by area.

Challenge

A capital city is the main city of a country where the government is based.

Can you use your atlas to find the capital city of each country?

Have you  ever gone on a journey or taken part in an activity when you have been asked to be a map-reader?

Most of our adults rely on Google Maps or satnav to help them get from one place to another. Even so, we still need to know how to interpret maps and directions to avoid getting lost. Think about your experiences of orienteering in school.

Let's do  a quick quiz to find out how good our map reading skills are. What do these symbols mean?

SLIDESHOW_{3556}

 Knowing how to read a map can help us to find our way on a physical journey.

Sometimes, our lives are described as a kind of journey too: we start as a tiny baby and go on a journey that might have many twists and turns before we reach old age.

For centuries, people have seen a connection between a physical journey and a spiritual journey, which is like a journey on the inside. spirituality can be understood as a sense of awe and wonder about the world, a connection to self, others and the environment, and a space for imagination and creativity. Many people see this as a journey that involves God.

In many faiths, people make physical journeys to visit places that are special to them spiritually.

Every year, millions of Muslims go on Hajj, a pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Completing Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam. This year, Hajj is due to take place in June, and many pilgrims will undertake it, intending to grow and deepen their faith.

Likewise, Christians from around the world visit Lourdes in France, or journey to Jerusalem. For these pilgrims, one reason to take such a journey is to understand better where they are heading in terms of their spiritual life.

Reflection:

Which places do you journey to you that are special? Let's reflect on how those places make us feel on the inside, and why they are special to us spiritually.
