RIC - The Last Light in the Valley

The wind threaded its way through the empty valley like a whisper carrying forgotten stories. Rowan tightened his grip on the lantern, its golden glow trembling against the growing dusk. Long ago, people had lived here — not just houses and fields, but laughter, warmth, and voices that filled the air. Now, only broken stone walls remained, half-swallowed by ivy and time.

His grandmother had warned him not to come.

“Some places remember,” she had said quietly. “And not all memories are kind.”

Yet curiosity tugged stronger than fear. Ever since the river had dried up and crops began to fail, Rowan had wondered what had driven the valley’s people away so suddenly. No graves marked their passing. No records explained their disappearance. It was as if they had simply… vanished.

A sudden clang echoed through the ruins.

Rowan froze.

The lantern shook in his hand, shadows leaping across the stones like living creatures. His breath thundered in his ears as he scanned the darkness. Then he saw it — a small metal charm hanging from a collapsed doorway, swaying gently though the air was still.

Someone — or something — had been here recently.

His heart raced, but beneath the fear bloomed a strange excitement. The valley wasn’t empty after all. And whatever secret it held was closer than he’d ever imagined.

Retrieval

  2. 2. Name two things that show people used to live in the valley.

  3. 3. Who warned Rowan not to go there?

Inference & Challenge
  1. 4. Why do you think the author describes the valley as “half-swallowed by ivy and time”? What does this suggest about how long it has been abandoned?

  2. 5. How does the author build tension just before Rowan hears the clang? Give one example from the text.

  3. 6. Rowan feels both fear and excitement at the end. Why might he feel excited even though he is scared?
