LC: To make conversations better by showing curiosity.

"Good talk isn't about talking faster or louder- it's about showing interest in what others say."

Let's practice different versions of conversations!

Version 1: Ignoring

Child A: "I like football because it helps me relax."

Me: "Okay."

How did that feel? Did that make you want to keep talking?

Version 2: Curious

Child A: "I like football because it helps me relax."

Me: "Really? What part helps you relax?"

                               or

"Why do you think that?" "tell me more about that."

Which version felt nicer? Why?

Curiosity keeps talk alive!

Let's create a 'Curiosity Wall' that we will add to our talk partner wall.

Activity:

Face your partner. Use on of these sentences as a prompt and demonstrate curiosity in your conversations:

  • Your favourite place
  • Something you're good at
  • A hobby you enjoy

Partner A speaks for 30 seconds. Partner B must respond using the curiosity starters. Then swap with your partners.

Now we will work in 3's. The third person will observe your conversations and tell you what you did well or how you could sound more curious.

Reflect:

How did curiosity change the conversation? Did it feel warmer?

LC: To be able to add and subtract decimals with up to 2 decimal places.

To be able to add and subtract amounts in pounds and pence.

Maya found the key while helping her grandad tidy the shed. It was small, rusty, and felt cold in her hand. No one seemed to know what it unlocked.

Later that evening, Maya noticed a tiny wooden box on the top shelf of the bookcase. There was a keyhole shaped exactly like the key she had found. With a deep breath, she turned the key. The box creaked open to reveal old photographs and a folded letter with her grandad’s name on it.

Maya smiled as she realised the key had been waiting to be found.

R- Where did Maya find the key?

I- Why did Maya take a deep breath before opening the box?

C- Which word best describes how Maya felt when she opened the box? Explain why you chose that word using evidence from the text.

LC: Infer characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives from their actions and justify inferences with evidence.

What do the clues in the text tell us about the character Ivan? Write a character description of Ivan, referring to the text to support your thoughts. Remember to think about his words and actions, NOT what has happened to him.
