Decimal Practice

During sports day, Leo stood at the back of the line, tying his shoelace for the third time. He didn’t like running in front of crowds, and the cheers from the parents made his ears burn.

When the race began, Leo ran steadily, keeping his eyes on the finish line. One by one, other runners slowed down. Leo didn’t notice he was in the lead until his teacher raised a whistle in the air.

After the race, Leo accepted his sticker with a shy smile. He hadn’t been the loudest or the fastest at the start, but he had kept going.

R- What did Leo receive after the race?

I- Why didn’t Leo realise he was winning the race?

C- Choose one word to describe Leo. Explain your choice using evidence from the text.

LC: Make predictions based on details stated and implied.

I am going to share the first 2 pages of Chapter 3. Let's read together.

LC: to explain the significance of the Mayan number system and describe their influence on us today

 The Mayan Number System

Mayan Numbers

The Maya were advanced Mathematicians, using the number zero and place values. They were able to calculate extremely large numbers.

Their number system enabled them to make really accurate astronomical predictions and they traced movements of the sun, moon, stars and even planets like Mars!

In their number system, the ancient Maya used only three symbols to represent all the numbers.

A dot had a numerical value of 1.

A line (or bar) had a numerical value of 5.

A shell had the value of 0.

Go to Seesaw to complete the task using the Mayan Number System. There are 2 tasks - you must complete task 1 then challenge yourself with task 2. It is tricky!

When you have completed your task, click on the picture below and explore the Mayan civilisation.

Choose one aspect of the Mayan culture and create an information fact sheet about what you have learnt on Seesaw.
