LC: Identify main ideas drawn from more than one paragraph and summarise these

Let's revise -  what is a paragraph?

Last time we learned how writers use paragraphs in stories.

Today we are going to learn how to identify and summarise the main ideas of a section of a story.

Can you remember what a summary is?

First, let's practise what we learned in our last lesson. We will identify the purpose of each paragraph.

My turn:

The purpose of the first paragraph is to ____________

LC: To draw inferences around character’s thoughts, feelings, actions, motives and justify with evidence from the text.

Let's re-read the poem.

What do you know about Macavity?

Tell me more…

Your task: You will now take on the role of chief detective and write some detective notes on the crimes Macavity has committed.

Use the pictures below to help you infer what his crimes are.

What would he be thinking or feeling about each crime?

What would his motive be for each crime?

Teacher model.

Macavity is stealing fish in the night. He looks like he is tip-toeing so he doesn't wake anyone up.  I think he is feeling brave because he looks like he is showing off the fish and he thinks no-one will see him. I think his motive/reason for stealing the fish is because cats like fish and he may eat them for his supper.

Your turn

Learning

Focus:  Explore, collect and spell word families with the root: quad.

Read with me the sentences below which all contain words with the root quad.

I drew a quadrilateral in maths by joining four straight lines.

Each regular shape was placed in a different quadrant on the grid.

The driver of the quad bike raced through the city centre before being caught.

My recent spelling score is quadruple what it was last year.

The root quad comes from a Latin word 'quadrus' meaning 'four'.

A quadrilateral is a 2D shape with four sides and four corners

Quadrant is one of four equal sections when you split a square or graph into four parts

A quad bike is a motorcycle with four large tyres

Quadruple means to multiply something by four

Can you choose a word and compose a sentence that tells me you understand its meaning?
