What Are Roots?
LC: Understanding roots, identity, and belonging.
Today we're thinking about roots.
When we hear the word "roots," we usually think of plants and trees. Roots grow underground and help a plant stay strong and healthy.
Tree Roots

What do roots do?
They:
- Hold the tree firmly in the ground.
- Take in water and nutrients.
- Help the tree survive storms.
Without roots, a tree would struggle to grow.
People Have Roots Too
People don't have roots underground, but we do have roots that help shape who we are.
Our roots can include:
- Our family
- Our home
- Our friends
- Our school
- Our experiences
- The values we learn
These roots help us feel connected and give us a sense of belonging.
Reflection Activity
Ask pupils:
- Who are the people that help you grow and learn?
- What places make you feel safe and happy?
- What values are important in your family?
Key Message
Just as strong roots help a tree grow, the people and experiences in our lives help us become strong, confident, and kind.
Closing Thought
Take a moment to think about one person who helps you grow and learn. Silently thank them for being one of your roots.
