Grammar Warmup

Innovate:

Use the pictures as inspiration to write some sentences with direct speech, using inverted commas and other punctuation correctly.

Thursday 23rd April 2026

Use inverted commas and other punctuation to punctuate dialogue.

Drama: Talk in role

In  pairs, take on the roles of Wallace and Gromit and stage a conversation between them. Gromit has realised that Miss Bake O’ Light is the killer. He can not speak, but what if he could?

Gromit must try to persuade Wallace that the love of his life is a killer! What would he say? How might Wallace reply?

Now we will record some sentences from the conversation, demonstrating the correct use of inverted commas for speech.

My turn:

Watch, listen and help as I model

Your turn:

Record your conversation between Wallace and Gromit. Remember to use the teacher model to help you.

Adapted

Gromit has found Piella's Book. He knows she has been killing the bakers and Wallace is next!

If he could speak, what do you think he would say to Wallace? What do you think Wallace would say back? Can you act out the conversation with a friend? Your teacher will video you.

Adapted Group 2

LC: Telling the time to the half hour.

Review

Spelling Detectives

Write 8 number between 1 and 10 in your journal.

When I tell you to, look around the room to find the words with your numbers on. When you find one, look carefully at the spelling, then go back to your place and write it correctly in your book. Focus carefully on letter formation and joins.

When you have found all of your words, rewrite them in alphabetical order.

Learning

Focus: Check spelling and meaning in a dictionary with a focus on Y4 Statutory Words.

Watch me locate the word possess in the dictionary and listen to the definition.

What word class is it?

Are there any example sentences provided?

Listen to me apply the word in two different sentences. applying the word in two new sentences.

Now I will write the word three times so that my brain and hand remember how to write the word.

How does the word link to the Y4 statutory word possession?

My bicycle is my most prized possession.

The soldiers took possession of the castle.

Now you follow the same sequence with the word:

business

How does it link to the word busy?

The word business can be seen as busy + ness. We know that when we add a suffix to a root word ending in y, the y is changed to an i before the suffix is added. So the y in busy is changed to an i according to the rule, before adding the suffix ness to make business.

Practise and Apply
