As geographers this half term, we are going to be undertaking Fieldwork.
Fieldwork means such things as:
Going outside to explore, such as looking at local roads, parks, or school grounds.
Asking questions, such as "Why is this here?" or "How does this place work?".
Collecting Data which could include taking photographs, drawing sketches, measuring, mapping, and interviewing people.
Examining physical features, such as rivers, trees, hills, weather and human features, such as buildings, shops, roads, bridges.
People who study the weather are called meteorologists. We are going to be investigating, measuring and recording the weather in our school grounds. What might we use this information for?

Do I know the difference between weather and climate?

Do each of the statements below describe weather or climate?

How will we measure the weather?
We are going to measure rainfall (precipitation), wind direction, wind speed and temperature using different measuring instruments twice a day for a week. We will record our measurements in a table, then use the information to construct graphs. We will learn about different types of clouds and use our observational skills to describe them and think about what they tell us about the weather.
Weather measuring instruments:
A wind vane, also called a weather vane, is an instrument that shows the wind direction. When the vane points north, it means the wind is coming from the north.
An anemometer measures how strong the wind is - its speed.
A digital anemometer works by using the sensors to detect the wind's force and convert it into a digital reading. . Here's how it works in simple terms:
-
Wind blows: The wind pushes against the sensors
on the device.
-
Digital display: The sensors convert the wind's movement into a digital signal.
-
Wind speed: The device shows the wind speed in
feet per minute. (FPM).
Measuring outdoor temperature is a way to find out how hot or cold it is outside. It is measured using an instrument called a thermometer. Temperature is usually measured in Celsius (°C) or Fahrenheit (°F).
A rain gauge is a tool used by meteorologists to measure how much rain falls in one spot over a set time, usually 24 hours. It acts like a collector—often a plastic tube or bottle with a funnel—that catches rain, allowing you to measure the depth of the water using marks on the side. Rainfall is measured in cm.
Task:
Draw a small picture of each of our weather measuring instruments. Next to each one, write what it is, what it measures, a short explanation of how it works and what unit it measures in.
Challenge: Why should a thermometer being used to measure temperature be placed well above the soil or concrete?
