LC: Draw inferences and justify with evidence from the text.

When we are reading, we use clues in the text to make inferences based on details stated or implied.

Shared read:

My turn:

Why do you think the monks at Lindisfarne were not prepared for the Viking attack?

How might people in Britain have felt when they first heard about the Viking raids? Explain your answer using evidence from the text.

Your turn (Write each response on a new line):

  • Why do you think the Vikings used longships instead of other types of boats?
  • The text says the Vikings first came to steal valuables but later decided to stay. What does this suggest about their reasons for coming to Britain?
  • Why do you think Alfred the Great chose to make an agreement with Guthrum instead of continuing to fight?
  • What does the text suggest about how Viking and Anglo-Saxon people eventually lived together?
  • Why might historians still be interested in studying the Viking invasion today?
  • What can we infer about the Vikings from the fact that they were traders and craftsmen as well as raiders?

 🐶 The Lost Puppy

Sam was playing in the park with his red ball. The sun was shining, and the birds were singing in the trees.

Suddenly, Sam heard a small sound. “Woof! Woof!” It was coming from behind a big bush.

Sam walked over to look. Behind the bush, he saw a tiny brown puppy. The puppy had a blue collar and big floppy ears. It looked scared and hungry.

Sam gently picked up the puppy. “Don’t worry,” he said. “I will help you.”

Sam took the puppy to the park office. The lady at the desk smiled. “This puppy belongs to Mrs Green,” she said. “She has been looking everywhere!”

Soon, Mrs Green came running into the office. “Oh, thank you!” she said, hugging the puppy. Sam felt proud and happy.

Inference questions

  • How do we know the puppy was lost?

  • Why did the puppy look worried?

  • Why did Sam take the puppy to the park office instead of taking it home?

  • How do we know the lady was happy to see her puppy?

  • Why did the puppy wag its tail when it saw the lady?

  • What kind of person is Sam? How do you know?

  • What might have happened if Sam had not helped the puppy?

What is the suffix in the second word in each case?

Although this suffix sounds the same as the suffixes -sion, -tion and -ssion , it is spelt differently

(-cian).

The suffix -cian is commonly used if the root word ends in -ic, although this is not always the case. Many of these words may be recognisable to you as job titles.

Watch how the -ic is dropped before the -cian suffix is added.
