Grammar

LC: To identify adverbs.

What is an Adverb?

An adverb is something that tells you where, why or how something is done.

For example:

Sara crossed the road safely.

Safia’s horse bravely jumped over the  hurdle.

The boy rode his scooter everywhere.

Many adverbs end in –ly but not all of them.

Not all words which end in –ly are adverbs.

Activity

In your books underline the adverb in each sentence.

Naomi tried hard.

She threw the ball up.

Lilly smiled kindly.

Liam ran upstairs.

Daniel coloured his picture carefully.

They shouted back, “It’s nearly time Thomas, go and wake Olivia up!” Tom ran into his sister’s room and jumped on the bed. They both grinned and chatted about the week ahead.

Challenge

This morning, the town has a new resident in the form of a stranger, who has appeared out of nowhere and has taken up residence on the town’s old, wooden bench because he apparently has nowhere else to go. This development took place overnight, with the town’s residents waking to this stinking, old man and his little, black dog. The stranger, nicknamed Mr Stink by locals, is sporting a bow tie and tweed jacket. However, one eyewitness commented, “His beard is disgusting; it’s full of old bits of egg and sausage and cheese that look like they’ve been there for years!”

What might the locals be thinking when they see the stranger in their town?
