To be able to solve problems of addition and subtraction, and to find the number families.

 

Children to use counters to represent animals. Ask for volunteers to come and write addition sentences and subtraction sentences. Use different colours for add/subtract. Model this alongside a part whole diagram.  Make sure you emphasise that 10 = 7 + 3 as well as 7 + 3 = 10 so pupils don’t start thinking that the equals sign means ‘the answer is’.

 

 Let's learn:

Read each sentence together use 'is the same as' where the = symbols are.

The addition and subtraction fact family for the numbers 5, 2 and 7 are:

Model writing sentences for 8, 2 and 10.

Independently, in yellow books, write the fact family for 6, 4 and 10 just like the model.

Children play game independently. Counters can be used for scaffolding, building to removing the scaffold and playing the game without counters when/if ready.

Now complete 65 & 66.

Read aloud their writing to adults and peers.

We are going to rehearse our poems and read them to the class. 

Can you research different classifications of animals?

Revisit the Science Learning Wall, what groups of animals did we learn last week? 

This week we are going to learn two more, reptiles and mammals.

Write some of the key facts about each of them for the LW. 

Now you are going to sort the pictures of animals into reptiles and mammals.
