Friday 17th January

Here are two spelling patterns that sound the same so we need to investigate when to use '-tious' or '-cious'.

Let's identify the root word in the following words:

fiction    fictitious

What do you notice about the words that take 'cious'?

Notes:

  • Not many common words end like this.
  • If the root word end in '-ce', the ending is usually spelt with 'c', for example: vice/vicious, grace/gracious.
  • Exceptions: anxious and suspicious.
