    The main idea is what the paragraph is mostly about.

    A summary is short way to say the most important things.

    Remember the below steps to identify the main idea and to summarise...

    1. Read each paragraph carefully.
    2. Ask: "What is this paragraph mostly about?"

    3. Look for the most important facts or ideas.

    4. Write 1 or 2 short sentences to say the main points.

    5. Put all the main points together into a short summary.

    Paragraph 1:
    Max the cat loved sitting on the windowsill, watching the birds fly by. One afternoon, he saw a bright red balloon float past the window. Curious and excited, Max jumped down and ran outside to follow it.

    Paragraph 2:
    The balloon floated over the garden and into the park. Max chased it through tall grass and under benches, never taking his eyes off it. In the end, the balloon got stuck in a tree, and Max sat beneath it, proud of his adventure.

    Maya really doesn’t like bugs! Her backyard has so many of them. Tiny ants crawl in long lines. Buzzing bees fly from flower to flower. Maya always watches the grass because sometimes a grasshopper jumps out. When that happens, she screams!
