What is the main idea of a paragraph?

 

1. Read Each Paragraph

• Read slowly and carefully.

• Ask: "What is this paragraph telling me?"

2. Look for Repeated Ideas

• Are there words, topics, or facts that are the same?

3. Think: What Do These Paragraphs Have in Common?

• Ask: "What is the big idea in both?"

4. Say the Main Idea in One Sentence

• Use your own words.

•  Keep it short and clear.

 

Example 1

Paragraph 1:
Eating fruit and vegetables helps you stay healthy. They give your body vitamins and energy.

Paragraph 2:
Drinking water and eating less sugar is good for your body. It helps your brain and keeps you strong.

Starter Activity

Let's see what you can remember about human and physical features in Geography...

On Mark Up, you are going to label each feature with P  for Physical feature and a H for Human feature.

Now I would like for you to close your eyes and think about where you live.

Do you have any human features close to where you live?

Do you have any physical features where you live?

Your teacher will now do a quick 2 minute sketch mapping out where they live. Once your teacher has finished, look at her map. What should we add to it? What features are important in a map?
