LC: To collect and classify adverbs.

Remember, an adverb is something that tells you wherewhy, how or how often something is done.

1. Look at the sentences below.

Let's circle the adverb in each one.

He smiled cautiously.

She frowned angrily.

He walked to school quickly.

Next she looked for her coat.

It would be his turn soon.

Activity - part 1

Let's read the text below. You are going to highlight all the adverbs in the paragraph.

Before dawn, Aife and her brother Farrel followed the hunters secretly into the forest. Bright stars still twinkled brightly in the night sky. They had left their clearing behind and now quietly entered the undergrowth. Tall trees cast shadows all around them. The foliage encircling the hunters became thick and green. As they listened, they could hear a baby boar snuffling under combs of feathery moss. Everyone suddenly became deadly silent with their spears raised up ready to kill their prey. Without warning, a golden eagle swooped down and snatched the boar. The hunters’ target unfortunately became the eagle’s prey. The hunt was abandoned. Everyone headed back to the farm empty-handed.

Activity - part 2

LC: Draw inferences around character’s thoughts, feelings and actions.

We are going to look at the lyrics from the Boudicca song again.

What impression do you get of Boudicca from these verses? Anything new? Any additional words we could use to describe her?

In what ways might Boudicca appeal/not appeal to the British public?

Explain fully, referring to the lyrics in your answers.

Boudicca Song Lyrics

[Verse 1]

My husband Prasutagus died, he was a Celtic king

I was his queen, so due to me was half of everything

Roman law gave half to me, so half was what they got

'Til their nasty soldiers came and took the blessed lot

Hey mister, I say you got the wrong end of the stick

His answer turned this sister into one angry chick

[Chorus]

No man, Roman'll push around this woman

You won't get far with Boudicca

Bowmen, yeomen, smash the Roman foemen

All say yah (yah!)

Boudicca

[Verse 3]

We marched on up the Roman road that's known as Watling Street

They trapped us in the forest, then thrashed us to our defeat

By now, you'd guessed I'm not the kind of girl to sit and cry

Be sold a slave to Romans? You know I'd rather die!

They tried to take me prisoner, so I led the Roman boys on

Instead of giving in to them, I swallowed special poison

LC: To describe why the Sikh sacred scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib, is significant to Sikhs and how the Guru Granth Sahib is treated with respect

Let's complete a quick quiz and see how much we can remember about Guru Nanak.

Your teacher will give you this quiz.

Today we are going to learn about the Guru Granth Sahib.

Guru Granth Sahib

The last Guru was called Guru Gobind Singh. He said that there were going to be no other living Gurus but instead they could find guidance in their holy texts.

The Guru Granth Sahib is a collection of teachings and writings by Guru Nanak and other Gurus as well as Sikh, Hindu and Muslim saints.

These scriptures are written in Punjabi and are greatly respected by all Sikhs as the living word of God.

The holy book is kept on a raised platform under a canopy in the place of worship.

Sikhs take off their shoes in the presence of the holy scriptures and also never turn their back on them.

At every festival, they are read continuously from beginning to end, which takes about 48 hours.

Activity

Glue the image of the Guru Granth Sahib in the middle of your books and write down rules that you must abide by when going to the Gurdwara to see the Guru Granth Sahib.
