Science

Friday 2nd May 2025

LC: To plan an experiment and make predictions on how shadows change in size according to the position of an object and its light source.

What have we learnt about light so far?

On your tables, you will be given a paragraph that has many false sentences about light. With your group, can you find what the 5 mistakes are? Write down what the correct sentences should be.

Light is very important because it helps us to see things around us. A mirror is a light source that shines brightly when you look at it. Light travels in straight lines until it hits something. When light meets an object, different things can happen depending on the material. A shadow is formed when something transparent is put in front of light, blocking it and creating a dark shape. We can also describe materials by how much light they let through. Opaque means see through, like a window or a clear piece of plastic. Translucent is when you can not see through it, such as a thick piece of wood. Transparent objects block light completely, stopping it from passing through. Reflection happens when light bounces off a surface like a mirror or a puddle. Mirrors are very good at reflecting light, which is why we can see ourselves clearly in them. Reflections can also happen on shiny metals and still water.

We are now going to plan an experiment that we will carry out next week.

You will contribute by giving ideas on how we could investigate how shadows change in size according to the position of an object and its light source.

Choose a sensible opaque object from your classroom that you have decided to test. Choose a torch that you would like to test.

Let's fill out our plan.

Uncle Egan grabbed his shield and spear.

The warriors left for battle.
