LC: Use suffixes to understand the meaning of words.

A suffix is a letter or group of letters which is added to the end of a word in order to form a different word.

The suffix -ly can be  added to adjectives to form adverbs that describe someone or something as being like or typical of a particular kind of person or thing.

For example: I saw Louise walking slowly to the bus stop.

The suffix -ly can be added to nouns to form adjectives that indicate the manner or nature of something.

For example: The staff are very friendly.

The suffix -ly can be added to nouns referring to periods of time to form adjectives or adverbs that say how often something happens or is done.

For example: I enjoy taking part in the daily mile.

Let’s have a go at putting each of these words into a sentence.

hilly                 easily               smelly

lovely               quickly             sadly

luckily              happily             wobbly

quietly             deadly             yearly

LC: Identify the main ideas from one paragraph and summarise these.

Can you remember what it means to find the main idea of a text?

Let's watch the video below to remind us.

Main Idea

A summary is a short version of a text that only includes the most important points and information. You can use SUM to help you remember what makes a good summary.

S – Shorter than the original

U – Using your own words

M – Main points only

We are now going to take a look at another example and find the Main Idea of the paragraph.

Bees are very important pollinators. They help flowers grow, reproduce, and produce food. Without bees, many plants would not survive, which means less food for humans and animals. Bees work hard all spring and summer, collecting nectar to make honey. Additionally, their role in pollination supports the ecosystem, allowing a wide variety of plants to thrive.

  • What is the main idea of the text? Choose the correct answer:
    Pollination supports the ecosystem.

    Bees work hard.

     Bees are very important pollinators.

  • Can we summarise why Bees are important? When we summarise a piece of text, we first look at what the main idea is. We use our main idea to help us to summarise the text. We need to find sentences from the text that will support the main idea.

Now it's your turn to have a go!

Recycling is very important because it helps our planet. When we recycle paper, plastic, and glass, we reduce waste that goes into landfills. This means less rubbish hurting our environment. For example, recycling one tonne of paper can save about 17 trees! By recycling, we can keep our earth clean and healthy for animals and plants. Everyone can help by putting their rubbish in the correct bins. Let’s work together to protect our planet by recycling every day!

  • What is the main idea of the text? Choose the correct answer:

By recycling we can keep our earth clean.

Recycling is important because it helps our planet.

Everyone can help by recycling.

  • Can you find information from the text to summarise the main idea?
