LC: Use inverted commas to punctuate direct speech.

Add or change punctuation to make this correct.

Come on, called Clac. He sat on the turf balk dividing his strip from the next, waiting impatiently.  This sun… I’ve had enough of it.

“So have I, groaned Grim." He slumped against the balk.

“And so have I, sighed Swein, collapsing in a heap like a sack of potatoes. Suddenly, a movement caught Clack's attention.

Come on," cried Clac, you and you and all the rest of you.

Panting heavily, the others followed him. “Look! insisted Clac, pointing again. Look!” And there, huddling in the hollow of the largest pit, the cottars saw what Clac had seen: two green children. Their skin was green, their hair was green, they wore green clothes. And one was a boy, the other was a girl.

LC: To design and label a catapult.

Our aim is to build a catapult from a from a pyramid frame that launch a ones cube at least 8 feet.

You are now going to complete the first part of your planning and design sheet:

Problem - Why am I making?

Design - What will it look like?

Parts of a pyramid catapult

  1. Base:

    • The bottom part of the catapult. This is the strong part that holds everything up, shaped like a triangle or pyramid.
  2. Throwing Arm:

    • The long stick that moves up and down to throw the object. One end has a cup that holds what you want to throw.
  3. Cup:

    • The part at the end of the arm where you place the ones cube. It helps keep the object in place until it’s thrown.
  4. Weight (elastic):

    • A stretchy band can pull the arm back to give it power.
  5. Projectile (ones cube):

    • The object you’re throwing with the catapult. This can be a rock, small ball, or anything safe to throw.

Design

When designing your catapult you will need:

  • A sharp pencil
  • A ruler

Remember your sketching skills from Art!

Once you have drawn your catapult, you need to label it.

LC: Know how prefixes change  the meaning of words.

Do you know what a prefix is?

Here is one part of the The Colour Monster Doctor story.

Which word begins with a prefix?

"Where do you have this feeling in your body?"

"Here, in my tummy."

"And what would you say it feels like? Pleasant or unpleasant"

"Mmmm . . . not pleasant."

Can you work out the meaning of the word? What clues are there?

So how does the prefix in this word change the meaning of the root word?

Now read this part of the story. With your talk partner, identify the word with a prefix and talk about what clues there are that help the reader understand the meaning of the word.

"On a scale of zero to ten, what level of discomfort are you feeling? A zero would be not upset and a ten would be very upset."

"Well - . . . an eight."

Using what you have learned about the prefixes 'un' and 'mis', work out and write down in your Reading Journal the meaning of these words:

unhappy                     unlocked                        misbehave                  mislead
