Use the comma to separate clauses in complex sentences.

A subordinating clause adds extra information but cannot stand alone. Main clause can stand alone as a complete sentence. 

If it rains, we will stay indoors.

Although she was tired, she finished her homework.

We went to the park since it was a sunny day.

He said that he was coming to the party.
