Rio de Janeiro is a huge seaside city in Brazil, famous for its beaches, 38m Christ the Redeemer statue atop Mount Corcovado and for Sugarloaf Mountain, a granite peak with cable cars to its summit.
The city is also known for its sprawling favelas (shanty towns). Its Carnival festival, featuring parade floats, flamboyant costumes and samba dancers, is considered the world’s largest.
Tricky vocabulary
Favelas - areas of poor quality housing, often crowded onto the hillsides
Carnival - a public festival during which people play music and sometimes dance in the streets
Port - a port is a place along the water, often a city or town, where ships can come to load and unload cargo or passengers.
