Recognise the use of repetitive language within a text or poem

To recognise repetitive language in a text or poem.

As it is nearly Halloween, we are going to read a poem about some pumpkins. We will use our voices to express what is being said so we don't read like robots. This is called intonation.

Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate
The first one said, "Oh my, it's getting late!"
The second one said, "There are witches in the air!"
The third one said, "But we don't care!"
The fourth one said, "Let's run and run and run!"
The fifth one said, "I'm ready for some fun!"
Ooh, went the wind and out went the light
And the five little pumpkins rolled out of sight

Can you stop the repetition in this poem? Is there something that is said over and over?

Can you spot any words that sound the same? Are there anymore examples? Is there a pattern to where they are in the text?

Let's listen to how others use intonation when they read this poem. Join in when you can.

(Watch 5 Little Pumpkins video on YouTube)

Your task is to choose a line from the poem and draw a picture to match. Write the sentence you have chosen in your book.

History

Can we use our enquiry skills to ask questions about the past?

What is History?

History shows us how people lived over time, what tools they used, what clothing they wore, what kind of shelters they built, even what they ate.

We also find out more about the most important events that took part in the past and who were the important people in the events that shaped the world as we know it today.

People who study this information about the past are called historians.

History is all around us.

Look out of the window. What is the oldest thing you can see?

To be a historian, you have to act as a detective.

Search for clues about the past and put them together to find out what happened.

Historians pose questions about the past. They examine the available evidence and develop answers to their questions.
As Historians you are going to think of questions you want to find the answers to about this picture.

Remember to start your question with one of these words.
