Subtraction facts to 5

 

Subtraction is when we take something away. Let's have a look at some subtraction facts and use our number bonds to help us.

I have 5 cookies in my lunch box. I eat 2 of the cookies. How many do I have left? 

 

 

 

Let's put it in a part part whole model to see.

How many cookies did we start with? This is our whole number. 

How many got eaten? This is one of our parts.

How many are left? This is the other part. 

 

 

 

5 - 2 = 3

 

 

 

 

In a nest, there are 5 dinosaur eggs. Suddenly, 1 of them begins to crack open. How many eggs are there left to hatch?
