Why do we have flashbacks?

A flashback is when a story moves from the present moment to an event that happened in the past.

Writers use flashbacks to:

  • Give the reader important information about a character’s past.
  • Show a character’s feelings and explain why they behave in a certain way.
  • Reveal something important that helps the reader understand the story.
  • Create mystery or suspense by slowly revealing what happened before.
  • Develop characters by showing experiences that have shaped them.
  • Connect the past to the present, showing how an earlier event affects what is happening now.
