The wind howled through the deserted streets as Maya clutched her coat tighter around her. Shop windows were dark, shutters pulled down as if the town itself had gone to sleep. She glanced behind her. No one. But the feeling of being watched had followed her since she left school.
She quickened her pace. Her footsteps echoed too loudly on the wet pavement. Just as she reached the corner, a flicker of light caught her eye—a single glowing lamp inside a dusty old shop with a crooked sign: “The Timekeeper’s Curiosity Shop.”
Maya hesitated, her heart pounding. She’d never seen this place before, and she’d walked this way a hundred times.
