The Hidden Path

Maya tightened the straps of her rucksack and stared at the narrow path disappearing into the forest. She had never been this far from the village before. Above her, the trees swayed in the wind, their branches blocking out most of the afternoon sunlight.

According to the old map, the path would lead her to an abandoned watchtower hidden somewhere beyond the forest. Maya took a deep breath and stepped over the fallen tree blocking her way.

As she walked deeper into the woods, the familiar sounds of birds slowly disappeared. Instead, she heard the crunch of twigs beneath her boots. Suddenly, a sharp crack echoed through the trees.

Maya froze.

She listened carefully, but there was no sound. After a few seconds, she continued walking, although she kept glancing over her shoulder.

Then, through a gap between the trees, Maya spotted something unexpected. A tall stone tower rose above the treetops. Its windows were broken and ivy covered its walls.

She smiled. After hours of searching, she had finally found it.

But as Maya approached the entrance, she noticed something scratched into the wooden door:

TURN BACK.
