LC: Retrieve and record information from non-fiction texts.

Non fiction texts

Features of non-fiction texts

Non-fiction books usually have special features to help you find the information you need quickly. This can be really useful because it means that you don’t need to read the whole book to find out what you want to know.

  • The contents page is found at the front of the book and tells you what is in each chapter.

  • The index is usually at the back of the book and tells you about the facts you can find on particular pages. It is in alphabetical order.

  • The glossary is also usually at the back of the book and is an alphabetical list that gives the meanings of important words.

  • Headings and sub-headings can guide you to the particular part of the page you need to read. They are really useful if you are looking at a webpage online.

We are going to do the first question together:

1. Number the sub-headings from 1-4 to show the order that they appear in the text.
What Do They Eat?
What Threats Do They Face?
What Do They Look Like?
How Do They Act?

Now in your books, answer the rest of the questions:

2. According to the text, which fruit is an Orangutan’s favourite?
pear
mango
banana
durian

3. Underline one word in the quotation below that suggests the number of Orangutans is going down.

… their homes are disappearing and the number of orangutans is reducing.

4. Fill in the missing word.
Some adult male Orangutans grow .....................on the sides of their face.

Grammar

Whisper to your talk partner and tell them what a preposition is.

Let's watch the clip again!

Here are some sentences that are missing prepositions! What prepositions could we include?

Write the sentences in your books with the correct preposition.

I held my umbrella _________ my head.
