How do you think the children were feeling when they first saw the roundabout?
How do you think the children felt after the roly-poly bird told them it was a real crocodile?
Activity
Imagine you are one of the children in the story on the fair ground. You managed to get away from the Enormous Crocodile and now you are safe at home. You are going to write a diary entry, explaining what happened during your day…
Before we begin, let's take a look at what features a diary entry should include:
Dear Diary, Monday 15th September
Yesterday, me and my friends went to the park to go and play on the swings. It was a hot sunny day. I couldn't wait to play tag with my friends. We loved playing tag around the trees. We came close to a funny looking tree that was shorter than the rest and it had lots of coconuts on it. So, we decided to have a race and see who could collect as many coconut as they could. All of a sudden, Tom saw a huge eyeball! We were so scared, we ran away screaming! We're scared to go back to that tree!
Let's take a look at what you must include:
First person pronouns
Starting clause
Date
Order the event
Adjectives

LC: To be able to find 100 more or less than a given number using number patterns.

L.C: To infer characters feelings
A great reader is always thinking while they read.
- What might be happening?
- How is the character feeling?
- Why are they feeling this way?
- What clues helped me?
- What do I already know that helps me understand?

Let's take a look at the following sentence:
"Ava stood at the edge of the swimming pool. She looked down at the water and took a deep breath."
Think aloud:
"I'm asking myself how Ava might be feeling. The clue is that she's standing at the edge of the pool and taking a deep breath. From my background knowledge, people often take a deep breath when they're nervous or about to do something challenging. I can infer that Ava may be feeling nervous."
Read the short passage:
"The football match was about to begin. Noah checked his boots for the third time. His hands felt sweaty and his stomach was fluttering."
- What clues can you find?
- What questions are you asking yourself?
- How might Noah be feeling?
- How do you know?

LC: To use a map to locate the capital cities and describe their position using a six-figure grid reference.

Sometimes it is necessary to be even more accurate. In this case you can imagine that each grid is divided into 100 tiny squares. The distance between one grid line and the next is divided into tenths.
- First, find the four-figure grid reference but leave a space after the first two digits.
- Estimate or measure how many tenths across the grid square your symbol lies. Write this number after the first two digits.
- Next, estimate how many tenths up the grid square your symbol lies. Write this number after the last two digits.
- You now have a six figure grid reference. In this instance, the tourist information office is located at 476334.
In the diagram above the four-figure grid reference for the square marked X is 8109. The six-figure grid reference for the church is 817098.
Now write the six figure grid reference and locate the name of the city.
