Monday
To be able to make subtraction stories and represent them in subtraction sentences.
To begin this lesson, place pupils in small groups. Provide them with cubes or counters (more than for the number of pupils in the group). Ask each of them to take a cube/counter. Then ask if they can come up with a number story for what they have just done. For example: There were 8 cubes on the carpet and 4 of us took 1 each. Now there are 4 cubes on the carpet. Name the cubes, e.g. carrots or cookies, and prompt pupils to come up with a story where only 2 of the group members take a cube. For example: 2 members of the group took a cookie each. That means 2 members did not take a cookie. Now there are 6 cookies on the carpet.
Repeat using other numbers and other objects- coloured pencils/water bottles, etc. Include using same number as group so '0' items are left.
Can you tell me a subtraction story based on the picture?
Write down some of the suggestions about the animals that are drinking water and those that are not. If they struggle, begin to tell a story about the animals and then see if someone can finish it.
Once the story has been told, go back and retell it. What would the subtraction sentence look like?
Go through the second example with the leaves on the trees.
Let's learn:
Add suffixes to verbs where no spelling change is needed to the root word.
