sentences that make sense

punctuation to begin and end sentences

You need to write the title and subheadings for each box, remember to use those question words and a question mark!

Starter – What is an art gallery?

Explain that artists display their artwork in galleries so that people can look at and appreciate it.

Remind children that they created roller-painted backgrounds and bird cut-outs inspired by Robert Gillmor.

Discuss the gallery rules:

  • Walk sensibly around the classroom.

  • Look carefully at everyone's artwork.

  • Keep hands away from the displays.

  • Say kind and positive things about other people's work.

2. Main Activity – Classroom Art Gallery Walk

Display all the children's finished artwork around the classroom on tables or along the walls.

Explain that the children are now artists visiting their very own art gallery!

Ask children to walk around the classroom in small groups, taking time to look at each other's artwork.

Encourage them to look for:

  • Different lines and marks made using rollers.

  • Interesting colours, shapes and patterns.

  • Different bird designs and details.

  • How each child has arranged their bird on their background.

  • Ideas inspired by Robert Gillmor.

As they explore, ask:

  • Can you find a bird with interesting patterns?

  • Which different lines can you spot?

  • What do you like about this piece of artwork?

  • How has this artist been inspired by Robert Gillmor?

3. Partner Discussion

Children sit with a partner and talk about the artwork they have seen.

Provide sentence starters:

  • "I like the way you…"

  • "I noticed…"

  • "My favourite part is…"

  • "Robert Gillmor inspired me to…"

Remind children that every artist has their own ideas and that we celebrate everyone's work.

Today we are going to practise forming our numbers correctly using Letter-join. We will watch how each number is formed, make sure we start in the right place and carefully practise writing them. Remember, neat number formation helps others read our maths and makes us confident mathematicians!"
