LC: To use research and enquiry to investigate significant changes to transport during the Industrial Revolution
Today, you are going to write your report about the changes to transport from the mid 18th century (canals) to the mid 19th century (railways).
Use your notes, that you have gathered, about the issues surrounding the transportation of goods by canal barge and your notes about the introduction of the railways.
You will need to explain that although the canals provided routes to deliver goods to support industry, there were still problems. Once you have highlighted these issues, you will need to explain how railways and the steam locomotive helped to provide a quicker and more innovative way of distributing goods such as coal and cotton.
Canal System vs The Railways
Transport played a critical role in the distribution of materials and goods throughout the Industrial Revolution. The demand for raw materials (cotton and coal) were in high demand in mill towns and cities of northern England such as Burnley and Manchester. Getting it there from ports like Liverpool needed to be efficient and constant.
