Tuesday

Tuesday 19th November

Long, long ago, when the trees were still young, there lived in Wales a brave and well respected prince called Llywelyn.  The prince, who loved to hunt, was accompanied everywhere by a magnificent wolf-hound known as Gelert.  With legs long and limber, and a strength that knew no bounds, no game was too big or too fierce for Gelert.  As time passed, the prince and the hound became inseparable companions.

Prince Llywelyn had a beloved son, a swaddling babe whose mother had died in childbirth. Llywelyn, who had loved his wife dearly, had been broken hearted by her death. His only consolation had been his son. On her death-bed, Llywelyn had promised his wife that he would cherish the boy and this he did.  He looked forward to the day that they could go hunting together.

One fateful day, Llywelyn went out hunting, leaving Gelert to guard his precious baby son and the homestead.   As he left, he gently stroked the dog’s huge, shaggy head.

"Guard them well, Gelert," he said. "Until I return."  Gelert locked eyes with his master and thumped his tail on the castle floor obediently.

R - What breed of dog was Gelert?

I - Did Llewelyn trust Gelert? Explain.

C - Find a word in the text that suggests it is going to be a bad day.
