ICWednesday 15th January 2025

LC: Evaluate how authors use figurative language, considering the impact on the reader.

Remember - Figurative language is the use of  words and ideas to suggest meaning and create mental images.

An example of this is the use of similes.

You could make out his eyes, glinting like black beetles under all that hair.

Makes me imagine dark, shiny eyes and long or thick hair.

...a pile of red rubies as big as glowing coals.

Creates a picture of a lot of very large glittering rubies.

Harry's legs were like lead again...

Indicates that Harry felt his legs were heavy and so he was finding it difficult to walk.

Have a look at some other similes JK Rowling used in her Harry Potter books, and describe the impact on you as the reader.

Ever since Harry had come home for the summer holidays, Uncle Vernon had been treating him like a bomb that might go off at any moment, because Harry Potter wasn’t a normal boy.

Professor Binns paused again, pursing his lips, looking like a wrinkled old tortoise.

Wood was holding up a large diagram of a quidditch field, on which were drawn many lines, arrows, and crosses in different coloured inks. He took out his wand, tapped the board, and the arrows began to wiggle over the diagram like caterpillars.

His eyes are as green as a fresh pickled toad.

She dived under the table to retrieve the bowl and emerged with her face glowing like the setting sun.

They reported that the Slytherin team was no more than seven greenish blurs, shooting through the air like missiles.

Know about how resources are allocated and the effect this has on individuals, communities and the environment.

What are Community Resources?

The term 'community resources' covers a wide range of things that are potentially helping the community.

This could be anything as long as it provides assistance or a service to the members of the local area.

To put it simply, community resources include people, places, activities and things.

They could be businesses, organisations, public service institutions or individuals in the community.

What resources are there in our community?

Community resources can be funded in a variety of ways. They can be run by completely non-profit groups or by the government, businesses or just one person.

As long as something is supporting a community, a smaller group of it or even one single individual, that thing or person counts as part of community resources.
